Chamonix-Mont-Blanc

Chamonix (pronounced like sha-mon-ee) is a village and a commune in the east French country side. The departement is Haute-Savoie.

Census

As of 1999 there were just under ten thousand inhabitants in the valley, with an area of 115 square km (45 square miles). The town is 1035 meters above sea level.

Winter Olympics

In 1924, the valley was proudly the first home to the Winter Olympics. Charles Jewtraw, will for ever hold the title as the first ever gold metal winner for winter Olympics for the opening event, the 500 meter speed-skating.
