Chamonix was first recorded in 1091. In this year the Count Aymon I of Genevois so kindly donated the entire valley to the Abbey Saint-Michel de la Cluse. The abbey was located in the Piement region of Italy, south of the valley. Instead of being loved by the local inhabitants (mostly sheep herders), it commanded respect for its dominating terrain and endless glaciers.
The records of these early settlers are the primary reason why the valley has opted out of trying to become the "sheep herder's capital of the world" and instead made it the spot to sky in Europe.
